Join Textile Center for a special Guest Teaching Artist workshop with Atsushi Futatsuya, a third-generation sashiko artist from a renowned sashiko family in Gifu prefecture, Japan.

In this intensive stitching workshop, learn the most important element in sashiko stitching: unshin (needle movement). Explore the history of sashiko and its role in cultural practice in Japan. After formal teaching of the “core and essence” of sashiko on the first day under the direction of Atsushi, students will begin to develop their own rhythm in stitching. Apply unshin to a favorite garment while learning other elements of Sashiko such as hitomezashi.

All levels are welcome. No sashiko or hand-stitching experience required.

Students are required to purchase class materials through the instructor’s website in advance of the class, approximately $150.

Discover humanity’s first fabric: felted wool! Learn about ancient techniques and contemporary applications, like felting to create fashion accessories for you, your friends, or your loved ones. Explore how to artfully mix colorful wool roving, and turn fiber into fabric with friction, using needle and wet-felted techniques. Embellish your felted pieces with stitching to create garments, hats, jewelry, and other accessories. Let creativity be your guide in this weeklong exploration of one of the most rewarding fiber art forms around.

Recommended for kids ages 7-12 yrs.
