Design Process: Elements and Principles for Fashion
July 31, August 1 & 2
9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Design is a process that uses clear steps to foster innovation. All designers use tools called elements and principles to explore ideas and create successful designs. Learn to use these concepts in creating compelling and flattering garments for yourself, or others. We will introduce the guidelines of design through historical costume study, looking at current artists and designers and illuminating exercises. Practice using color, texture, line, shape and form to successfully design garments, accessories and artworks; rhythm and repetition, how to create balance and pleasing proportion, and how unity can tie an entire ensemble together. You will create portfolio of design ideas for your chosen concentration (clothing, accessories, textile art) and a have clear understanding of how to use the design process to explore, focus, edit and evaluate ideas. Each day, an element and a principle will be introduced through discussion, object study, and images and you will pursue an individual design interest in a choice of methods; drawing, drafting patterns, draping, constructing test garments, then evaluating the results to guide the actualization of the designs. Focus on completing a pattern for one design or work on a collection of ideas for continuation after the workshop. Students can have any level of experience in sewing/garment construction, and should be interested in looking at current and historical dress, gathering information, sketching ideas, and discussing their designs in a friendly atmosphere. Materials fee $25 payable to instructor. Supply list provided.

Polaroid Transfer Mini Art Quilt
Saturday July 26
10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Learn the art of Polaroid transfers using a Daylab slide printer and your 35mm slides. This process involves transferring the image directly to a receptor surface. We interrupt the development process while doing so, resulting in a slight watercolor feel to the images. First we will print on paper, play with manipulation and hand coloring. As you get the hang of the process, we will print on fabric and set about creating a mini art quilt using hand stitching, beads and whatever funky embellishments you have on hand. Please bring several 35mm slides to print, (instructor will also have extra slides to use), scissors and your favorite beads & buttons. Materials fee $40, payable to the instructor.

Emulsion Lift Art
Saturday August 16
10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Using a Daylab slide printer we will create unique prints from your 35mm slides - fabulous feature images for non wearable art, quilting and other non traditional fiber arts. We will touch on printing images on a variety of paper and fabric. Our main focus will be creating emulsion lifts. The nature of the lifts is that they become transparent and very pliable; they can be pulled and squished about, altering the image completely. These slightly transparent and filmy images will be applied to paper and fabric including cotton, linen and silk. The end results can be stitched into a mixed media collage, a diptych or left as is. This process also allows us to apply the image to a variety of dimensional surfaces. Please bring several 35mm slides to print, (instructor will also have extra slides to use), scissors and your favorite beads & buttons. Materials fee $40, payable to the instructor.

What happens when you dye that blue and white scarf with red or green? This is your chance to find out. Learn how to layer transparent colors, how to use a little color theory and take time for some structured play with color and dye. Materials are included, but you may also bring a few fat quarters to further your explorations. Materials fee $40, payable to the instructor.

Felted Fusion
Wednesdays August 6 & 13

Infuse your wool with inclusions of thread and metallic fibers, hand and machine stitching and more. After your bag is formed, you will do some light wet felting to fuse everything together and then put everything in to the washing machine for "power felting". Shape and block your bag and then finish with buttons and more embellishments to complete your design. Students will have homework to complete between classes. Supply list provided. New Age Looping
Friday, Saturday and Sunday
August 22, 23 and 24
9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Looping is a living legacy from the Stone Age -- a timeless technique that continues to evolve as contemporary fiber artists give it their own spin. Looping be elastic and drapey, or it can be dense and structural. It won't unravel when you put it down, it's impossible to drop stitches, and you never "lose your place" in a pattern when you make up your own designs. It's relaxing work you can enjoy even when your time is fragmented. This workshop begins with basic knotless netting and an emphasis on tension control and stitch placement, then introduces purl looping, bead looping, cross-knit looping (a.k.a. single-needle knitting), cross-check color management and intarsia looping. Work at your own pace, sampling these and other variations or concentrating on a few as you make small pouches from hand-painted waxed linen, hand-dyed wool and a selection of other fibers. Our focus will be on process and possibilities. Class discussion and the many samples in Donna's New Age Looping Trunk Show will inspire you to continue this exploration on your own. Materials fee of $35 includes fibers, needles, molds, and a workbook with additional project ideas. Learn more about looping at the instructor's web site, www.donnakallner.com. All levels welcome.

Instructor: Donna Kallner
$314/$273 Textile Center members
Donna Kallner is a fiber artist, teacher and writer from rural northern Wisconsin known for the contemporary ways she uses looping and other ancient fiber techniques to tell timeless stories.
Donna designed her first piece for exhibition (a cross-stitch sampler on blue gingham) as a 4-H project. Thirty-some years later her looping and coiling are exhibited nationally and included in Fiberarts Design Book 7, she is a popular speaker, and she shares her excitement and energy in workshops she teaches across the country. | |
