If your notice of withdrawal is received at least one full working week before the start of your workshop, you will receive a refund of your workshop fee, minus the $10 processing fee.
If you withdraw less than one week before the start of your workshop, your registration fee (minus the $10 processing fee) will be refunded only if there is a waiting list for the class. There is no refund of workshop or processing fees if your notice of withdrawal is received less than one full working day before the start of your workshop.

In this class, we will learn the step-by-step approach to transforming your T-shirt fabrics into a keepsake quilted pillow and get tips for making larger quilts with the rest of your collection. Color Wheel in Cotton 
Friday, January 27, 1:00 - 4:00 pm OR Thursday, March 15, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
Dye two sets of complete color wheels and their afterimage hues, creating a 48-color spectrum of fat quarters and fat eighths. Use just two sets of primary colored dyes, one warm and one cool, and learn how to get exactly the color you want and be able to reproduce it. Learn how and why afterimages help you to enhance the dominant colors in your project. We will work with cotton fabric and fiber reactive dyes. Color Wheel in Wool

Our "Queen of the Color Wheel" brings you a whole new fiber: wool! Dye your own 12-step color wheel using acid dyes on wool fabric. Learn the art of getting repeatable, predictable colors every time and the tricks to steam setting your colors for great results. This class is a great introduction to dyeing wool; beginners welcome! Discharge Shibori 
Wednesday, March 21, 6:30 - 9:30 pm
What happens when you remove color from fabric instead of adding it? Using common household products, you will experiment with discharge to find the answer to this question. Bring commercially or hand-dyed cottons and try numerous shibori techniques to manipulate the fabrics and create patterns. Related Colors

Use two to four dyes to create a group of color-related fabrics that will coordinate for your next project. We will start with various resist techniques to create a multi-hued focus fabric, then consider color values, saturation and hues for the coordinating colors to develop a palette of fabrics that you can use as a grouping for a project. We will discuss the effects of adding neutrals and brights, textures and a "zip" color to help make the project sing. Recommended pre-requisite: Color Wheel in Cotton and/or Color Blends class. Color Blends

This class will help you to dye a "chromabridge", which is blending two distinct colors to get all of the variations in between. Do you know what happens when the deep blue sea meets an orange sunset? We will find out! Next, take one color and discover all of its variations from whisper soft pastel to bold bright color. We will work with fat quarters of cotton fabric and fiber reactive dyes. Leave with more than 25 different colors to add your stash! Download Supply List

Dye Lab Training

Learn the ABCs of what it takes to rent the dye lab for yourself or a group of your friends. This free training session will show you what is available in the lab, what materials are included in your fee and the safety equipm ent you should be familiar with. We will go through the process for making your reservation and everything else you need to know.

Felted Poinsettia Ornament 
Thursday December 1, 6:00 - 9:00 pm
In this project based class we will explore wet felting, using soap and water to help create felt fabric. Using wool roving as a base, we will start off learning about the agitation, water and heat needed to bind the individual fibers creating felted wool of various sizes. We will then assemble the pieces to construct a gorgeous poinsettia ornament. Materials fee $4, payable to the instructor.

Seamless Felted Slippers 
NEW ADDED SESSION- Saturday March 3, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Take your feltmaking to the next level and learn the technique of shifting the shape of a two-dimensional felted package into a three-dimensional finished project. We will use wool fiber, a piece of plastic, soap, water and an upper body workout to create a pair of seamless slippers. No sewing or assembly required. Optional - bring a small amount of various fibers and yarns to use as inclusions if desired. Wear comfortable shoes and please note, some physical stamina is required for this class. Felted Vessel 
Saturday, March 10, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Felting doesn't have to be flat; try a seamless felted vessel. Use wool fibers to create a finished form with no sewing, knitting or crocheting. Jill will guide you through the process and show you how to pull, stretch and spot full to sculpt interesting and organic shaped vessels. Silk fibers, fabric and yarns will be used to add surface color and texture to your finished piece. Bring a small amount of various fibers and yarns to use as inclusions if desired. Felted Tote Bag

We will explore traditional wet felting technique to make a functional tote bag using wool roving, prefelt and resists. Learn how to lay out the wool for a sturdy seamless bag and even add a pocket. We will talk about how to shape and finish your bag, including a demonstration on how to make felted ropes for a sturdy strap. Intro to Katazome (Japanese Paste Resist Stencil Dyeing)

Explore a centuries old Japanese surface design technique that incorporates elements of both printmaking and painting, and relies on simple non-toxic materials such as rice paste resist, natural pigments and soymilk. You will design and cut your own stencils from a waterproof paper called Yupo. (Traditional stencil paper and techniques will be demonstrated.) We will paste our designs on fabric, and then dye the work using natural pigments in a soymilk binder. Incorporate your creations into quilting and/or wearable art projects, or simply enjoy them as fiber art! Materials fee $12, payable to the instructor.

Paint a Rose in Stitches 
Wednesdays, March 7, 14 and 21, 6:00 - 9:00 pm
Silk shading is the art of creating realistic pictures using silk thread on silk fabric. In this class, students will create a picture of a dog rose. Start with framing up the silk and transferring the pattern using the prick and pounce method. Students will then learn the basic stitches used in silk shading: long and short, split, satin, stem, French knot and fly stitch. A little embroidery experience is helpful. Needlepoint 101 
Wednesdays, April 4, 11 and 18, 6:00 - 9:00 pm
Students will create a small picture using wool yarns on a canvas base fabric; the finished piece can be used as a picture or cushion. Learn how to prepare the canvas and to work some of the most common and useful needlepoint stitches, including basket stitch, tent stitch and some fancier needlepoint stitches as well. Down and Dirty Pattern Drafting

We will start out with an overview of the basics of pattern making. Then, you will learn to measure, draft and fit a basic skirt and bodice pattern to fit your shape. There will be a little homework between sessions. Throughout the class, you will learn a large number of quick tricks, when it is possible to cheat and when you really have to do things the hard way. Spiral Dress

Make an incredible 20s style retro dress, inspired by the fashions of master couturier Madeleine Vionnet. You will transform a simple rectangle of fabric into a unique spiral dress - sleeveless, with no zippers or buttons. It can hang comfortably on the body or be tied with belt to make it more fitted. The dress is sewn on the grain but wraps around the body to hang on the bias, which makes it incredibly flattering for all figures. Learn the basics from fabric and color choices, to patternmaking, construction and finishing. Download Supply List

Prerequisite: Down and Dirty Pattern Drafting. This is a workshop class, where you choose what you want to focus on. Have you tried a few projects with your slopers and need some advice? Work together to brainstorm and problem solve. Have everything drafted but don't know how to finish? Get practical tips on patterning finishing details - facings, hems, cuffs or anything else you can imagine. Bring ideas and as many stalled, stuck projects as you have. Notan: A Study in Design
Mondays, February 6, 13 and 20, 6:00 - 9:00 pm
Notan is a Japanese concept meaning dark-light, or the interplay of positive and negative space in design. In this workshop, we will explore the dynamics of this principle using black, white and gray paper to work through a series of exercizes exploring and applying these ideas. Image Transfer on Fabric

Learn to add printed photographs to fabric using three techniques: prepared fabric sheets, both cotton and silk organza; photo transfer paper; and transparency transfer onto acrylic medium. Resists for Patterning Fabric

Add pattern to fabric using over a dozen chemical and mechanical resist techniques - everything from crayons, acrylic medium, and potato flakes to freezer paper and clamping. This workshop is designed for teachers or youth program leaders who want to bring a little art into their everyday math and science lessons. Learn how symmetry, patterning and repetition, inertia, taxonomy, hyperbolic shapes, digital design, chemistry and chromatography all intersect with quilting, weaving, spinning, dyeing, felting and more! Your Digital Camera Hands On

Bring your digital camera for an evening of getting to know your camera. We will look at common camera settings that could help you get great photos of your fiber art - macro mode, white balance, flash or no flash - and what all of those little icons mean. Every camera is different, so come prepared to jump in and explore. You must bring your digital camera in good working order, along with its instruction manual.

Independent Filmmaker Projects, Northern Clay Center, Highpoint Center for Printmaking, Textile Center and Minnesota Center for Book Arts join forces for a multimedia exploration of clay, book-making, textiles, film making and printmaking. Each session will take place at a different art center and will include a brief tour and hands-on medium-specific work with a professional artist. Participants will be encouraged to stretch their creative muscles and take risks with new art forms, and will walk away from the class with completed projects, renewed creativity, and perhaps even a lifelong passion for a new art form. A Basket from All Angles

Starting with a triangle base, learn to weave this easy basket which incorporates traditional basket materials with other natural elements. Use dyed, round reed to create your basket and then choose between leather, palm, pine needles or philodendron sheath for your rims. Intro to Needle Felting

This class will be held at the American Craft Council Library.
Discover the joys of "painting" with wool roving! Learn about the tools, materials and techniques that will allow you to achieve a painterly effect when needle felting on felted wool pieces to frame or embellishing on your favorite wool mittens, hats and sweaters. Stitch Embellished Stationery

This class will be held at the American Craft Council Library.
Embroidery isn't just for dishcloths and baby blankets anymore! Learn a few basic stitches and then embroider designs onto decorative papers to create your own signature line of note cards. Needle Felted Flora 
Wednesday, March 21, 6:00 - 9:00 pm
This class will be held at the American Craft Council Library.
Capture the glory of spring blooms while continuing your exploration of painting with fibers. Using an image of your favorite flower or plant, you will learn how to plan your composition, create and use a template, layer fibers to create sensational color depth, and incorporate various fibers, art yarns, and beads to add texture and interest. Finally, learn how to effectively frame your piece to showcase its beauty. A little needle felting experience is helpful. Materials fee $8, payable to the instructor.
