Classes for Kids & Teens? Descriptions marked with a * are open to kids or teens and require no previous experience. These are not kid's classes but rather beginner classes for all types of beginners. Young people will be challenged while curious adults will be inspired...and no one will be bored! Please see class description for ages. Other classes may allow older teen students with instructor permission. Please contact the Textile Center at 612-436-0464 for more information before you register.

All classes have limited space available and some fill quickly. Please feel free to call and check on class availability before you send in your registration. Artful Knit: A Sculptural Approach to Knitting
Saturday & Sunday March 13 & 14

Develop a personal language of forms by experimenting with knitting fundamentals to uncover the enormous possibilities of a three dimensional knit. By manipulating stitches and solving knitting geometry, participants will learn to 'think knit'. The class will explore the use of non-traditional materials and cover a range of techniques to help create shape and stability when working in three dimensions. This is a process-oriented workshop, with time devoted to making samples and experiments as you learn each technique or concept. Time will be set aside for the teacher to individually discuss with students their ideas for future projects. Your new knitting vocabulary can be applied to sculptural or wearable creations. This class is geared towards proficient hand knitters with machine knitters welcome. Knowledge of crochet is also helpful. Download Supply list.

Adrienne Sloane's sculptural fiber work has been published in Fiberarts, American Craft, The Surface Design Journal and is profiled in the book, Knitting Art: 150 Innovative Works from 18 Contemporary Artists. Sloane has work in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Goldstein Museum of Design as well as private collections. Let your colors crystallize. Learn a low immersion dye technique that allows the spontaneous crinkles and folds in your fabric to form an organic crystalline or fractured pattern. Subtle ripples to bold patterns like stained glass can emerge, based on the colors you choose. This class lets you explore with multiple dye colors in each piece and create a dozen fabrics that will become your favorites for every project. Dye a Color Wheel in Cotton

Dye two sets of complete color wheels and their afterimage hues, creating a 48 color spectrum of fat quarters and fat eights. Use just two sets of primary colored dyes, one warm and one cool, and learn how to get exactly the color you want and be able to reproduce it. Learn how and why afterimages help you to enhance the dominant colors in your project. We will work with cotton fabric and fiber reactive dyes. Color with Paintstiks

Anybody can draw with crayons! Come and play with big crayons called Painstiks to create wonderful effects on fabric. Paintstiks are permanent, colorful, and easy to use with a variety of application techniques like texture rubbing, drawing, stencils and more. Hand Painting with Thickened Dyes
Wednesdays February 17 & 24

Create your own custom pallette of thickened dyes to use for handpainting cotton, rayon and silk fabrics. Learn to mix thickened dyes using alginate and a fixer that you add each time to only the dye you are using. Try techniques for color mixing with red, yellow, blue and black to create the perfect color and consistency for the results you want. Finally, learn hand painting techniques for working with these dyes including brushes, rollers, simple stamps, found objects, and monoprinting with plexiglass plates. Building a Pyramid Color Chart

Create a color chart based on Pascal's Triangle. Starting with red, yellow and blue, you will develop a set of 45 colors, arranged in a triangular chart. Each color has its own formula so that you can choose one and know exactly the formula to use to get each color. A great reference for your dyeing projects and developing your own pallette of colors. Stitched Shibori
Wednesdays March 3, 10, & 17

Techniques known as ori-nui, mokume and karamatsu shibori use stitches in the fabric to act as a resist for dyes. Unique effects can be created by the type of stitch, folds in the fabric and the arrangement of stitches all used in combination. Everything from subtle abstract patterns to pictoral pieces are possible with just a handful of artfully placed threads. You choose your fabric (silk, cotton, rayon, bamboo or combination) and learn to stitch and dye these shibori patterns. Materials fee $15, payable to instructor. Download Supply list.

Transfer images onto fabric using a variety of techniques and materials. Learn ways to create crystal clear photographic images, try making hand-altered images for an artistic look or even create woodblock style images and transfer them to your fabric. Gelatin Monoprints
Tuesday March 23

Come to play with cool, squishy gelatin to make clear and versatile prints on fabric. We will use textile paints and stencils, stamps, and sponges to create images on the gelatin. Then print that image on to fabrics, creating a unique effect and one-of-a-kind image. Take your gelatin pad home and continue to play. Bring paper towels and an apron, all other materials are provided. Materials fee $15.

Lutrador and Painted Fusible Web

Do things with web and interfacing the manufacturer never envisioned! Lutrador can be painted, manipulated, melted, and sewn while maintaining super strength. Misty Fuse and Wonder Under can be colored in several ways and used to alter fabric and layer embellishments. Come to explore renegade uses for common materials. Variations on a Theme: Shibori

Transform simple silk scarves into multicolored masterpieces in just one evening! Learn some simple shibori techniques - resist dying in the Japanese tradition, using folding, clamping, binding, stitching and more to create patterns in your fabric before you add the color. Etsy: Talking Shop

Have you had an intro to Etsy and now you want more? This is a hands-on session to help you spruce up your shop for the new year. Bring your laptop and we will go step-by-step through listing a new item in your shop. Then we will get together as a group for feedback on your new listing, general shop "look" and policies. Lots of time for one-on-one and help from your peers. Homework required before class, list provided.

A Pinch of Photoshop: Hands On

Bring your laptop installed with Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) and we will spend an evening hands-on getting to know your way around a few basic Photoshop tools. We will start with cropping, resizing, and some simple ways to brighten and touch up your images. Then try a few filters for some special effects. Come to class ready for hands-on practice that will get you started making Photoshop work for you. Bring a few digital images and some basic computer skills.

Mastering Machine Tension

Master the skill of adjusting and perfecting the tension on your sewing machine for different sewing applications. You will review basic principles of lock stitch sewing machine operation and tension adjustments. You will learn about different shuttle actions and bobbin case styles, thread types and sizes, selecting the proper needle type and size, basic maintenance, how to adjust both upper and lower thread tension and tips for gauging proper tension. Using Specialty Threads

Specialty threads (metallics, woolly threads, stretch, top stitching, ribbons and yarn) offer a whole new world of creativity and expression for textile artists. Learn the technical skills in how to use them, which ones work better than others, specialty needles and their application. This is a hands-on workshop, please bring your machine in good working condition. Note: You must have a good understanding of machine tension and be comfortable adjusting both top and bottom tension on your machine. Armed with this new personalized tool, we will focus on color theory and how to make it work with your style. Studio Pilates - Living Pilates Every Day

As an artist, it's easy to focus on what you are working on for hours on end and then suddenly realize you are tired, sore, and stiff from bending over your studio table or sewing machine. Studio Pilates is an invitation to bring the benefits of a little recess into each dayto be mindful of your breathing, to explore mind-body connections, to effectively utilize core muscles to support your spine, to increase your awareness of posture and positioning, and to playfully emphasize strength and flexibility throughout your daily activities - even while sitting at your desk! Angela Kneale, Occupational Therapist, has achieved full certification from Stott Pilates and has completed Franklin Method training. She provides therapy services, teaches Pilates and wellness, is the author of four books, and specializes in the integration of movement, breathing, postural alignment, and relaxation techniques for optimal health. Felting with a Friend

Meet a new friend at class or bring your favorite grown up or little person to play with soapy water and wool. Together you'll turn soft, colorful fluff into felted beads, pictures and creatures. Fun for all and it's easy to learn and do more at home. Materials fee $3 per person. Ages 6 and up. (Students ages 6-10 should be accompanied by an adult. Ages 10 and up can be kid-kid pairs.)

Wet and Dry Felting
Thursdays April 22 & 29

In this class we will explore both major felting techniques, wet and dry. Using wool roving as a base, we will learn about the agitation, water and heat needed to bind the individual fibers and make felt. During class we will create wet felted beads to construct a gorgeous necklace. Then, using a barbed felting needle we will move on to dry felting, making decorative coasters by adding needle felted embellishments to recycled wool fabric.You will leave class with a great introduction to many felting techniques and ways that you can combine them. 3D Techniques & Mixed Media

Fused Plastic "Fabric"

A billion single-use plastic bags are given out for free each day, 100 billion of which end up in American landfills each year. Instead of throwing them away, put them to use again as a fused plasitc lunch bag, messenger bag or wearable art. Learn techniques for fusing layers of plastic together to make a sturdy material you can sew and embellish. Please bring at least 6 plastic grocery bags to class.

In this class, you will create freestanding papier mache icons, or sacred objects that reflect your divine essence. On the first day, you will carve a Styrofoam armature and cover it with papier mache. On the second day, multiple techniques will be demonstrated to create a beautiful textured surface using Paperclay, textured fabric and paint. You can experiment with making a face or use face molds that will be provided. Finished piece will measure 15-17 inches high. Materials fee $30, payable to the instructor at the first class session. Drop Everything Date Night

Who said wool wasn't sexy? Set aside a night to "drop everything" and do something fun with your Valentine. Spend an evening literally "spinning a yarn" with a drop spindle. Ply your strands together or celebrate your singles! We will have lots of laughs and you will leave class with several small skeins of beautiful handspun yarn. Materials fee $5 per person.

Are you a spinner or a felter? Do you dream of creating your own fiber and color combinations for your yarns and works of art? This class is your dream come true! First, learn to dye wool roving using a number of different methods like hand-painting, immersion and squeeze bottles. During the second class, you will blend and combine your hand-dyed roving using hand carders and a drum carder to design your custom fibers. Amigurumi Adventures

Amigurumi is the Japanese art form of creating small ultra-cute stuffed animals and creatures using crochet. Learn the simple crochet techniques traditionally used for amigurumi are in a crochet crash course. Then employ these techniques to make your own basic Amigurumi shape. Add some handpainted skeins to your yarn stash! We will spend an evening in the dye lab painting your favorite yarn to make a one of a kind skein. Mom will love the fabric necklace. What about fabric journals and bookmarks for you brother and sister and a colorful handkerchief for Dad? (Well even make a surprise something special for you to keep.) At the end of class well wrap them all up and attach gift tags so they are ready to hand out later. Whoever you make your presents for, they will really appreciate that you make them yourself and used your imagination too. Materials fee $7, payable to the instructor. No supply list. Ages 6 and up welcome.

Felting with a Friend

Meet a new friend at class or bring your favorite grown up or little person to play with soapy water and wool. Together you'll turn soft, colorful fluff into felted beads, pictures and creatures. Fun for all and it's easy to learn and do more at home. Materials fee $3 per person. Ages 6 and up. (Students ages 6-10 should be accompanied by an adult. Ages 10 and up can be kid-kid pairs.)
