This summer, the Textile Center will present a major symposium about art cloth, an area of growing, vital interest in the field of fiber art, July 20-26, 2006. This symposium will explore both the artistic and technical aspects surface design. Renowned art cloth artist Jane Dunnewold will be featured as the keynote speaker, speaking about her philosophy of cloth as art as well as about innovations in art cloth design. Dunnewold, from San Antonio, Texas, is an award-winning fiber artist and author and she draws a large, loyal audience of artists wherever she appears. Dunnewold is also the juror for an exhibition of art cloth in the Textile Center's Joan Mondale Gallery, "Never Static: Art Cloth at the Textile Center," July 8-August 16.

Traditional and experimental techniques in surface design will be taught using the Textile Center's state-of-art dye lab, providing a unique hands-on component to this symposium. The majority of workshops will involve hands-on surface design activities in combination with slide presentations and lectures. Workshop presenters include Susan Monday, Ann Johnston, Els van Baarle, Holly Brackmann, as well as Jane Dunnewold. Additionally, many other local and regional artists will present seminars and lead round table discussions throughout the weekend. Presenters at the symposium have also been invited to participate in an "artist trunk show" Saturday evening.
Surface design is considered a leading edge of artistic innovation in the field of fiber art. Artists are melding ancient dye techniques with contemporary technology to create art cloth: works of art on cloth. Art cloth is created using dyes, color removing agents, paints and foils which are combined with processes including silk screen printing, hand painting, stamping and stenciling. Techniques range from traditional forms of batik, shibori, and African mud cloth to contemporary applications of thermo-fax and computergenerated imagery. Artists work to layer imagery, both abstract and representational, with applications of color and texture.

The Textile Center is pleased to offer this symposium as one way to foster excellence and professionalism in this art form. By drawing together fiber artists from across the country to explore surface design and participate in a dynamic artistic and educational exchange, the Textile Center is contributing to the advancement of art cloth in United States. Emerging and established artists, fiber art enthusiasts, and students are invited to attend. Registration materials and more detailed information about the symposium will be available from the Textile Center offices and on our website - www.textilecentermn.org - in February 2006.

FAQ's
Is there anything for beginners at the Symposium? I don't really know anything about art cloth?
Yes! All of the sessions on Saturday and Sunday are seminars, discussions and demonstrations. You can come to any of these sessions and get a taste of what art cloth and surface design is all about. No experience is necessary.

What if I am inspired by something I see at the Symposium? Where do I go to learn more?
Many of our presenters teach classes throughout the year. Several presenters teach classes regularly at the Textile Center. Be sure to take a look at our class catalog. Many other presenters teach for local quilt shops and fabrics stores, local colleges or out of their own studios. Our national workshop presenters also travel and teach in many parts of the country.

Are there any scholarships available?
Scholarships and discounts for volunteers are available for the Saturday and Sunday seminar sessions. Please contact Becka Rahn for more information.
Volunteer Opportunities at the Symposium.
We have a number of volunteer jobs available for those interested in helping out with the Art Cloth Symposium. Being a volunteer does not admit you to the symposium events free of charge, but you can register for seminar sessions at a reduced volunteer rate in exchange for working a 4 hour volunteer shift. A variety of 2 and 4 hour shifts are available from July 18-July 26. Please call or email Becka for more information.

Can't get enough? You can also learn more from Jane at her class for the Split Rock Arts Program. Jane will be teaching The Complex Cloth: Advanced Layering Approaches July 30-August 4.
